Winterizing your skincare
As the temperature drops and winter blankets the world in a layer of frost, it's not just our wardrobe that needs a seasonal upgrade—our skincare routine deserves attention too. The cold air, low humidity, and harsh winds of winter can wreak havoc on our skin, leaving it dry, flaky, cracked, irritated, and in need of extra care. In this blog, we'll explore the essential steps to winterizing your skincare routine, ensuring your skin stays hydrated, moisturized and healthy throughout the colder months.
H is for hydration and humectants: Winter's chill often translates to drier air, which can dehydrate your skin. Combat this by boosting your skin's hydration levels by incorporating humectants into your routine. What is a humectant? A humectant is going to be any product that will draw water/hydration into your skin. 2 common examples are: Hyaluronic Acid & Glycerin.
In the winter months, it’s also important to Opt for a richer, more nourishing moisturizer that provides deep moisture and protection from the elements. Consider using products with ingredients like skin friendly oils/butters, peptides and ceramides, which help lock in moisture and create a protective barrier against the cold and elements outside.

Gentle Cleansing: While it's important to cleanse your skin regularly, be mindful of the products you use during winter. Harsh cleansers can strip away natural oils, exacerbating dryness. Choose a gentle, hydrating cleanser that effectively removes impurities without compromising your skin's moisture barrier. Consider cleansing oils, balms and cream. I am a big fan of just doing a tepid water rinse in the morning for the winter months, especially if your skin is already, dry, sensitive or irritated. If you are oily or have acne-prone skin, it’s important to make sure to cleanse in the mornings too, just use something gentle and save your glycolic or salicylic washes for the evening.

Exfoliation- it’s still important to exfoliate in the winter months, but I prefer a chemical or enzymatic exfoliant over using a scrub type exfoliant. The chemical and enzymes digest the dead skin and aren’t abrasive to the skin. You want to look for products that contain fruit enzymes, or gentle acids like Lactic and Mandelic acids.

Protect with SPF: Don't be fooled by the winter chill—harmful UV rays are still present, and they can damage your skin. Make SPF a non-negotiable part of your winter skincare routine. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply it daily, especially on exposed areas like your face and hands. Don’t forget to reapply when outdoors! In the colder months, your skin needs a bit of extra care. It's like giving it a comfy sweater for the winter. Being gentle and pampering your skin helps prevent it from getting all dry, irritated, and cranky. Dry skin can lead to all sorts of problems, like looking older than you are and damaging your skin’s protective barrier, along with just feeling plain uncomfortable.
So, why not show your skin some extra attention this winter? It's a simple way to keep it happy and healthy. Skip the drama, and your skin will thank you.
