Psoriasis Beneficial Treatments & Triggers

BENEFICIAL TREATMENTS FOR PSORIASIS

If you have facials Psoriasis, DON’T think you can’t get a facial, because you can!

There are several things that can be done to help improve the appearance of facial Psoriasis and Psoriasis in general. There are also some things, that you will want to avoid, to help prevent flares.

Below is based on not only my educated opinion, my experience as an Esthetician, but also as someone who has suffered with Psoriasis since I was a small child.

There are 3 major points to a facial to target facial psoriasis.

1. Gentle Products- Cleansers, toners, serums, moisturizers, masks, etc. used during your facial, should be tailored to someone that has sensitive skin, as these products are less likely to be irritating to the skin and typically contain little to no fragrance.

2. Appropriate Exfoliation- gentle chemical peels or enzymes are an excellent option, to exfoliate the psoriasis plaque buildup. Mechanical methods of exfoliation can be risky, as they cause friction on the skin and that can sometimes lead to a flare-up. I would recommend avoiding treatments like microdermabrasion, scrubs, and dermaplaning.

3. Intense moisture/hydration- Steam is great for softening plaque psoriasis, but make sure that the steam is not too close to your face 🥵. Hydrating cream or lotion cleansers are best. Hydrating toners/sprays, and intensely moisturizing masks, containing suitable oils and butters (ex: Shea butter, Jojoba Oil, Squalene, etc.) should be applied to deeply nourish the Psoriasis.

....An additional treatment that I love for helping with Psoriasis is LED! The Deep Red LED is known to calm and soothe irritation within the skin and has shown in studies to improve psoriasis. Of course, you will need to speak with your physician and make sure there aren’t any interaction between your medication and receiving an LED treatment.

Home care is all about exfoliate and hydrate! I love to use Le Mieux’s Exfoliating gel cleanser, to exfoliate psoriasis build-up. This cleanser contains Salicylic, Lactic & Hylauronic Acids, Aloe & Arnica! Excellent for exfoliating, while also hydrating, healing & soothing the skin. Then I follow it up with using Le mieux Hylauronic Shea Butter mask, the perfect duo for home care of those areas where you have psoriasis.

What triggers psoriasis?

Common psoriasis triggers include:

STRESS!

Stress is one of the most common psoriasis triggers. At the same time, a psoriasis flare can cause stress. Stress management techniques are very important.

INJURY TO THE SKIN
Psoriasis can appear in areas of the skin that have been injured or harmed. This is a result of the Koebner [KEB-ner] phenomenon, which states scratches, sunburns, bug bites and vaccinations can all trigger a psoriasis flare. (also waxing!)

ILLNESS
Anything that can affect the immune system can trigger psoriasis. That is why you may experience a flare following an ear infection, bronchitis, tonsillitis or a respiratory infection. There is a connection between streptococcus infection (strep throat) and guttate psoriasis, as it often triggers the first onset of guttate psoriasis in children.

WEATHER
The weather may trigger a flare. Cold weather can often cause psoriasis flares due to less sunlight and humidity, heated and drier indoor air, as well as stress and illness. Warm weather can often improve psoriasis because of natural sunlight and higher humidity.

Other Possible Triggers

Although it is less common, some people with psoriasis suspect that allergies, certain foods, alcohol or environmental factors trigger their psoriasis. A great way to learn about your unique set of triggers is to track them over time. Keeping records of your symptoms and triggers can help you anticipate and treat your flares.“
