Everyday Skin Care Explained
I’ve been in this industry long enough to know that most people want to take care of their skin, but many people simply do not know where to start and become overwhelmed by all the endless options, steps and order it takes.
Then there are some people who just want to do skin care essentials and move on with their day, both are fine and while it seems overwhelming, the truth is, taking care of your skin can be like starting anything new, it just takes some getting used to, but once you have the hand of it, you could do it with your eyes closed!
My goal with this post is to explain why basic skin care is so important and to cover the basis, with some product recommendations to make it even easier at the end.
What is “basic,” skin care? Basic skin care is going to be the essentials such as, daily cleansing of the skin, weekly exfoliation of the skin, providing moisture to the skin and protecting the skin with SPF. This covers cleansing of the skin, treatment of the skin, providing the skin with nourishment and protecting the skin for damage and burns.
Those are the easiest 4 things I suggest starting with if you are new to taking care of your skin.
Let’s discuss it further:
Step 1-
Cleansing:
This is step that you preferably should do morning and night* (*If you have very dry, dehydrated or barrier impaired skin, this may be a step to skip in the morning and just do a tepid water rinse…this will be covered in a future post.)
Cleansing is just that, cleansing the skin of dirt, excess oil, bacteria, and build-up that accumulates throughout the day or night. It is important to not leave your skin dirty, particularly before you go to bed as your skin is in “repair,” mode at night. If you go to bed without washing your face, it makes it very difficult for your skin to perform necessary functions and you can end up with issues like breakouts, dry, dehydrated, and irritated skin that will lead to pre-mature aging and damage. The other reason it is important to cleanse the skin is due to any other products you apply to your skin at night will not be able to effectively reach the skin’s surface let alone penetrate to the deeper layers, due to buildup being in the way.
Step 2-
Exfoliation 1-3 nights /week:
Exfoliation is using a product containing a physical or chemical exfoliant for the purpose to sloughing/removing dead skin build-up from the surface of your skin. Exfoliation is important for many reasons, like removing the dead skin to allowing radiant, healthy skin to be visible, to to help your cellular turnover rate stay healthy, to reduce and prevent premature signs of aging, and be exfoliating on a regular schedule, you are allowing any serums, masks and moisturizer reach your skin.
Step 3-
Moisturizer:
Creams, lotions, balms that added moisture and/or hydration to the skin. This step is vital for ALL skin types. I know many who have acne/acne prone skin or oily skin types, think that this is not necessary for you to moisturize and even think this step is detrimental, but that is the polar opposite of what a moisturizer is. every skin needs added moisture and hydration to not only keep your skin healthy, but to prevent and slow down the signs of aging. Moisturizer adds beneficial oils and waters to your skin, that your skin needs to properly be protected throughout the day and repair effectively at night.
Step 4-
Sun Protection / SPF:
If you have followed me for any length of time, you’ve probably heard me say this a million times, SPF = BFF. It’s true. The single, best investment you can make for your skin is buying an SPF that is formulated for the face. Did you know, the sun is responsible for an estimated 90% of the aging of your skin? Prolonged, unprotected sun exposure causes cumulative sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, redness, and irritation of the skin, not to mention the potential of skin cancer. You want an SPF of at least 30 and reapplication when you are out in the sun, is a must for it to remain effective. Every two hours if you are out in the sun and every hour if you are also in the water is the general rule of thumb. This is the single, most inexpensive way to slow down the signs of aging and prevent skin cancer.
Let’s Recap…
